I'm a solo indie developer behind The Cinema Rosa - an immersive (PC & Mac) exploration game set in an abandoned cinema. Featuring 1930s art deco architecture. AMA

I am the lead artist and solo developer behind The Cinema Rosa, an immersive exploration game set in an abandoned cinema. AMA

The Cinema Rosa explores themes of: loss, romance, nostalgia and regret, aiming to take the player on an emotional journey through the psychological effects of a relationship.

As you explore, you encounter various notes, objects and puzzles that you can interact with, reconstructing the cinema back to its former glory days.

The game is set for release in late 2018/early 2019 on PC & Mac.

Do you have a job other than game development? How plausible is it to be a full time independent game developer?
Apr 21, 5:14AM EDT0
What part of this game are you most proud of? Why do you think players will like this game?
Apr 19, 6:46PM EDT0
What inspired you to stat creating this game? How much of your personality is inserted in it?
Apr 19, 2:44PM EDT0
What kind of people do you think would enjoy your game?
Apr 19, 1:54AM EDT0
Did you self-learn game developing or did you go to school for it?
Apr 18, 12:15PM EDT0

I am self-taught. I learnt before universities were even offering game design courses. The courses also vary considerably in quality.

Apr 18, 7:13PM EDT0
Did you consult people in the film industry to make sure the setting of your game authentic?
Apr 18, 7:06AM EDT0

Yes. I've had the chance to visit several art deco cinemas during the research (first six months) phase of this project. Luckily, they were very kind in sharing some background information and showing me the back rooms. I've also spent a lot of time doing online research, particularly looking at the decline of old-style projectors, to be replaced with digital projectors. There was a fantastic photo essay series on this topic. You can find it here: https://www.wired.com/2012/11/analog-movies/

If someone is to play a game for the first time, what games do you recommend they play besides your own?
Apr 18, 5:49AM EDT1

I'm really influenced by other walking sims and exploration games, including but not limited to: Dear Esther, Gone Home and Virginia.

I like the idea of cinematic, interactive storytelling, and these games tend to use storytelling in unique ways (Blending voiceover, interactivity and visual ques).   My idea is to take this one step further and have the environment dynamically react to the narrative.

How many hours does it take to design a game of good quality, graphics and bug free?
Apr 18, 12:33AM EDT0

Depends on the game. Most independent productions with small teams take years to produce. Big budget studios can create games each year. But again - this depends entirely on scale and scope.

Apr 18, 1:18AM EDT0

Very cool!  I'm working on my first game now.  What language are you using?  What are you using to create your visuals and animations, they look amazing.

Apr 17, 11:50AM EDT1

We're building the game on Unreal Engine (4.19), using the internal blueprint system (GUI coding), rather than traditional coding. Glad you like the visuals! We're busy refining the lighting/design, but we're almost there I think.

As a solo indie game developer, writer, and designer how do you schedule your time and balance everything?
Apr 16, 6:35PM EDT0

Get a calender. Stick to schedule. Set milestones and deadlines.

Apr 16, 6:45PM EDT0
Are you planning to make more games with the similar design?
Apr 15, 12:47PM EDT0

This would depend on market research/analysis.

Apr 16, 6:45PM EDT0
Where and how do you test your game ideas to ensure that they will actually be fun as well as engaging?
Apr 14, 6:08PM EDT0

See the answer below on community feedback/engagement.

Apr 16, 6:46PM EDT0
How did you come up with the idea to place the story of the game in an old theater?
Apr 14, 12:31PM EDT0

When cinemas first began opening across the US, it was the height of the art deco period (the 1930s). To me, the art deco style of architecture is extremely interesting, both for its intricacies of design and its textural detail.
